MSc in Integrated Architecture

Think, design and build a responsible architecture with the future of society and the planet

The logics of architectural design and construction are in continuous adaptation to the context in which they operate. Its systems of methods and principles are expanded to face challenges such as climate change, technological disruptions, economic collapses, geopolitical strategies and demographic movements, among other imminent global challenges.

MIAD is a postgraduate course destined to review the most significant phenomena that affect our society, and to rethink them from environmental, social, digital, tectonic and cultural logics that are oriented towards an evolved conception of architecture.

MIAD has an integrated approach to architectural design and research serving the areas of design, technology and culture alike. MIAD is based on the visions that the international references are giving on the global context. For this, solutions and tools will be presented and taught to expand the logics that give imminent answers to common challenges.

Duration: 9 months

Postgraduate in Efficient Energy

Postgraduate’s in Energy Efficiency in collaboration with ENDESA, the largest electricity company in Spain and the first private power company in Latin America. University and Company are joined as partners and work towards a common objective: to promote the implementation of energy-efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly facilities.

Aimed at:

  • Treating the energy efficiency in buildings associated with their active systems of greater consumption.

  • Providing tools not only to improve efficiency but also to achieve a greater contribution of renewable energy sources in your projects and facilities.

  • Design and calculation of systems.

  • Tools for the evaluation of these systems, both at the project and finished building level.

  • Incidence of the different systems in the energy efficiency from the usability viewpoint

  • Study of energy efficiency in the buildings associated with their active systems of greater consumption.

  • Tools for improving efficiency.

  • Tools for a greater contribution of renewable energy sources in projects and installations.

The result of this project was the BCN Digital Room, a space for training, testing, and innovation that incorporates real and affordable solutions for housing and where participants can do their internship as a postgraduate student.

Postgraduate in Environmental Architecture and Sustainable Urban Planning

With a multidisciplinary nature, the Postgraduate in Environmental Architecture and Sustainable Urbanism trains highly qualified professionals for the application and development of the most advanced strategic criteria in sustainability. Participants improve the interventions in the territory in architectural design and urban planning, taking into account respect for the environment.

This Postgraduate is the ideal framework to think and discuss about the current sustainability criteria.

Duration: 1 semester

Research Areas

Integrated Architectural Research

To foster innovation, we integrate the architectural design with the contributions of construction technologies, environmental analyses, mapping practices, advanced layout, representation techniques, social studies or conceptualization tools, among other areas of knowledge.

Technology-enhanced learning

Examining new technologies and methods that improve learning effectiveness and democracy, collaborative learning, and those that enable us to analyze and assist the learning process.

Research Groups

Pedagogy

This is concerned with the renewal of architectural education as a response to the ongoing cultural, technological, social and economic transformations. It includes the following research topics:

  • Case-based research: analysis of precedents (styles, periods, architects, buildings) and systematization of architectural knowledge (taxonomies, case repositories).

  • Participatory processes: Urban analysis, place and identity, housing (co-housing), with the participation of professionals and citizens.

  • Learning spaces: development and implementation of innovative learning spaces as a result of the hybridization of different pedagogical models: constructivism, blended-learning, collaborative learning, and learning in the workplace.

Sustainability

This line is concerned with the development of tools, methods and strategies at the scale of the building and at of the city - in order to guarantee the sustainable and balanced transformation of the built environment. The research topics are grouped in two areas:

  • Urban regeneration: Rehabilitation of obsolete buildings and urban environments to adapt them to current demands, taking into account social, energy and economic sustainability. Definition of patterns of intervention in architectural heritage (especially in the Mediterranean area) based on sustainability criteria (environmental, social, and economic).

  • Energy efficiency: ecological and environmental impact (of the project and of the constructive systems); energy systems (tools and methods for modeling and analyzing the energy information of buildings and urban environments; passive systems); simulation and prediction of energy performance.
